What "Padres de Hoy" Means and Why It Matters

Iris didn't write "Padres de Hoy" from theory. She wrote it from 30+ years of sitting with parents in our Elmhurst, Queens office, Spanish-speaking mothers wrestling with children who now refuse to speak Spanish; South Asian fathers navigating generational trauma while trying to support their teenagers' mental health; immigrant parents terrified that seeking therapy means they've failed.

The book became a resource. Our Parenting Skills Program became the intervention.

Core principles from Padres de Hoy woven into every session:

  • Discipline without shame

  • Communication across language gaps

  • Identity preservation vs. adaptation

  • Mental health destigmatization

  • Co-parenting across cultural divides

Parenting Skills Training for Every Type of Parent in NYC

Our parenting skills program is designed for any parent or caregiver who wants to strengthen their relationship with their child. It is especially beneficial for:

Immigrant Parents Raising First-Generation Children

You carried your family across borders. Now you're watching your child absorb values, language, and behaviors that feel like rejection. We help you distinguish between normal adolescent separation and genuine disconnection, and respond to both with skill.

First-Generation Parents Carrying Intergenerational Trauma

You may have received harsh discipline, emotional unavailability, or survival-mode parenting. You want to break cycles but don't have models for what comes next. Our behavioral psychotherapy approach teaches concrete alternatives rooted in attachment science.

Parents of Children in YES's Student Programs

If your child is receiving support through our 450+ NYC school partnerships, our Parenting Skills Program aligns your home environment with their therapeutic progress. Consistency between school intervention and parenting approach accelerates results.

Co-Parents in Conflict Over Cultural Values

One parent pushes assimilation; the other demands tradition. The child becomes the battleground. We facilitate conflict resolution that honors both parents' fears while prioritizing the child's developmental needs.

Parents Navigating Children's Mental Health Diagnoses

ADHD, anxiety, depression, eating disorders—when your child receives a diagnosis, your parenting must adapt. We teach behavioral modification techniques specific to clinical presentations, not just "tough love" or permissiveness.

How the Parenting Skills Program Works

This isn't a six-week lecture series. It's an active, personalized psychotherapy treatment for the family system.

There are parenting classes at community centers and family therapists across NYC—but few offer the depth of specialized treatment found here.

A Founder Who Wrote the Book

Iris Yankelevich didn't just study parenting. She authored "Padres de Hoy" (Today's Parents), developed curricula for CUNY and St. John's University, and trained the clinicians who now practice her methods. You're accessing a treatment refined over decades.

Media-Recognized Expertise

You've seen Iris on Univision Canal 41, Telemundo, and WPAT 93.1 FM. Media outlets recognize her as a definitive authority on the specific, complex challenges facing New York's diverse parenting communities.

Cultural Fluency

A therapist who speaks Spanish but doesn't understand the specific nuances of Dominican vs. Mexican vs. Colombian cultures won't serve you as well as ours. Our family psychotherapy includes this vital, deep-rooted cultural competence.

You Don't Have to Choose Between Your Heritage and Your Child's Future.

The parents who thrive in our Parenting Skills Program aren't those with perfect answers. They're the ones willing to examine their own wounds, learn new skills, and build bridges between the world they came from and the world their children are growing into.

Iris Yankelevich built YES for parents like you, parents who love fiercely, struggle visibly, and refuse to accept that generational trauma must repeat.
